seal ledge guest house

mount desert, maine

Located on the shores of Somes Sound near Northeast Harbor, Maine, this very small (736 s.f.) summer guest house is a supporting act to the main house located on the same property. Many materials, details and finishes are inspired by the ca. 1960’s, mid-century modern main house.

The house boasts two screen porches - one for sleeping, the other for dining - and a large deck just 75’ from the water. All interior materials and finishes are natural wood - not an ounce of sheetrock or paint in this building.

In spite of their relative close proximity, the design mandate was to allow simultaneous occupancy of both houses without impacting the residents of either building. The building is sited in the woods amongst large pine and oak trees and is well-shielded from the main house. The foundation consists of helical screw piers to minimize disturbance to the trees. Access is by footpath only.
