alamoosook camp

orland, maine

A small (1,060 s.f.) summer camp on the shores of Alamoosook Lake where simple forms and durable materials (standing seam metal roof, cedar shingles with a 4” exposure, cement fiber clapboards, and Ipé decking) are combined to create a pair of clean, uncluttered buildings in the Maine woods.

A large, three-sided screen porch is the place to be! As the ground slopes toward the lake, one feels like they are in the trees with commanding views to the water and Great Pond Mountain beyond. Douglas Fir beams and Western Red Cedar combine for an inviting warmth. Its 12’ high ceiling with transom screen panels make for a lofted feel and provides a vertical panorama of water, trees and sky. The lofted volume of the adjacent living room and kitchen grabs the same panorama. All rooms open onto a 60’ long deck on the water side making for a camp where the Maine woods and water are always in sight and just a few steps away.

In spite of its wooded location, building orientation and roof slope have been optimized for summer sun angles. Thus, this small camp is fitted with a solar PV array and is modeled to be near net-zero energy!
